Chess Champ

The Resume

    (June 25, 1975- )
    Born in Tuapse, Russia
    World chess champion (2000-07)
Won three team gold medals and three individual gold medals in Chess Olympiads

Why he might be annoying:

He began smoking cigarettes in his teens.
Alexei Shirov, winner of the 1998 candidates match, refused to play against Gary Kasparov, claiming the prize offered was too small, allowing Kramnik to become the first challenger to play for the world championship without winning a qualifying tournament since 1935.
The first six years of his reign as titleholder are in dispute because FIDE recognized different titleholders.
In a match against the chess computer Deep Fritz, he made a move dubbed 'the blunder of the century' that changed a probable draw into a checkmate on Deep Fritz's next move (November, 2006).

Why he might not be annoying:

In his victory over Kasparov (2000), he became the first challenger to defeat a world champion without losing a game since Jose Capablanca defeated Emmanuel Lasker in 1921.
He defeated FIDE champion Veselin Topalov in a unification match (2006) to become the first undisputed world chess champion since 1993.
He was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a form of arthritis that causes considerable discomfort when he sits during matches.
