    He lied about his age to join the Navy in WWII and was discharged a year later when the Navy discovered his actual year of birth.
    He said about his early years in Hollywood, 'I was told that, even though I was a good actor, I wasn't handsome enough to be a leading man and I wasn't offbeat enough to be a character actor.'
    He credited a bad haircut with launching his career as a character actor.
    MST3K devoted an entire host segment to him, wherein he was described as 'the poor man's Martin Milner.'
    His biological father died before he was born and his biological mother gave him up for adoption.
    He won a Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actor for 'The Rainmaker.'
    He had good chemistry with 'Police Woman' star Angie Dickinson.
    He owned (and occasionally performed at) the Fiesta Playhouse in San Antonio, Texas.
