Why he might be annoying:

He was typecast first as a western villain, then as a rural policeman.
NBC tried to build a show around his Sheriff Lobo character, but it bombed.
He appeared at a lot of rural truck shows.
When his kids kept leaving their bikes in the driveway, he ran them over with his car (the bikes, that is, not the kids).
He called his wife 'Pie.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was known for his kindness and accessibility to his fans.
He credited his high school drama teacher with his success, and would call her once a week to thank her.
He let the neighborhood kids swim in his pool.
In 1986, he was awarded the Outstanding Indian/Native American of the Year Award by a Native American group.
On the set, he refused to eat until the extras and crew members had been served.
Sometimes he would even man the cafeteria line himself.
