Auto Racer

The Resume

    (July 31, 1992- )
    Born in Elk Grove, California
    Middle name is Miyata
Raced in the NASCAR Cup, Xfinity, and Truck series
Has driven for Chip Ganassi Racing and Hendrick Motorsports
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year (2014)
    2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion
Appeared in the film ‘Logan Lucky’

Why he might be annoying:

His favorite vacation spot was Tulsa, Oklahoma (isn’t it everybody’s?).
He was fired by Chip Ganassi Racing, and suspended by NASCAR, after he was heard using the N-word during a Twitch iRacing stream, in which he thought his mic was off (April 13, 2020).
The blowback was substantial enough for multiple corporations such as McDonald's, Credit One Bank, and Chevrolet to terminate their sponsor partnerships with him.
He unintentionally provoked an altercation with Bubba Wallace, at the NASCAR Cup Race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, after he caused Wallace’s car to scrape the outside wall (October 16, 2022).

Why he might not be annoying:

His mother is Japanese-American and his grandparents were imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp.
He is the first Asian-American driver to win a Rookie of the Year Award in a NASCAR national touring series.
He managed to make a comeback by not just apologizing, but also showing genuine contrition and a willingness to grow from his mistake (for instance, he visited Minnesota days after George Floyd was murdered and participated in a variety of classes to learn more about African-American history).
He has dealt with his own form of prejudice as an Asian-American race car driver.
When Denny Hamlin was criticized for tweeting a Family Guy meme about him and stereotypical Asian drivers, he showed maturity, saying: ‘Being in the position that we're in, you have to be very careful with what you put out in the public. I wasn’t personally offended by it … but I know, and I think he knows now, there are millions of other people that a tweet like that could offend. [But] no hard feelings from me.’
He maintained his cool while being angrily confronted and shoved by Bubba Wallace, who had crashed into his car in retaliation. Wallace was suspended for one race for his behavior (October 18, 2022).
