    Appeared in the films ‘Purple Heart Diary’ (1951), ‘Houseboat’ (1958), ‘Pork Chop Hill’ (1959), ‘King of Kings’ (1961), ‘The Pigeon That Took Rome’ (1962), ‘Hell Is for Heroes’ (1962), ‘Madigan’ (1968), ‘Lovers and Other Strangers’ (1970), ‘Dirty Harry’ (1971), ‘Capone’ (1975), ‘The Enforcer’ (1976), and ‘Any Which Way You Can’ (1980)
    Portrayed Hamilton Burger in ‘The New Perry Mason’ (1973-74)
    Appeared on Broadway in ‘A Hatful of Rain’ (1956), ‘One More River’ (1960), ‘Anyone Can Whistle’ (1964), ‘The Rose Tattoo’ (1966), ‘The Seven Descents of Myrtle’ (1968), and ‘Woman of the Year’ (1981-83)

Why he might be annoying:

    He divorced Jennifer Revson before their marriage reached its first anniversary.
    He was the lead in two TV series that were cancelled after one season, ‘The Reporter’ (1964) and ‘Monty Nash’ (1971).
    In movies and on TV, he was usually typecast as Italian-American cops or detectives.
    He sports a decidedly out of place Brooklyn accent as Barabbas in ‘King of Kings.’
    He said about acting on television, ‘Artistic challenge? There isn’t any.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    He served in the US Navy during World War II.
    He studied acting in the same dramatic workshop as Tony Curtis and Ben Gazzara.
    He was nominated for a Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Play for ‘One More River’ and two Golden Globes as Best Supporting Actor for ‘Houseboat’ and ‘The Pigeon That Took Rome.’
    Despite his tough guy image, he was also successful in musical theater.
