The Resume

    (September 6, 1940-August 12, 2007)
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
    Painter and printmaker
Known for her three-dimensional 'shaped canvases'
Paintings include 'Painter's Progress,' 'Bounding Dog,' 'Do the Dance,' 'Don't Be Cruel,' 'Bop' and 'Euclid'

Why she might be annoying:

In the fifth grade, she would sell erotic drawings to classmates for a quarter.
One critic, noting the number of her paintings resembling vortexes, said that her art could induce vertigo.
She got testy when the coffee cups that feature in many of her paintings were described as tea cups, which she considered dainty.
The Village Voice wrote, 'Her idea of 'painterly skill' is so raw and original that it can seem as if she paints with a windshield wiper.'

Why she might not be annoying:

Her influences ranged from Picasso and Cezanne to the cartoons she loved as a child.
She was unpretentious enough to use phrases like 'big bloopy shapes' to describe her paintings.
A critic wrote that she 'embraced Pop Art's playfulness without succumbing to its chilly detachment.'
She designed mosaics for two New York City subway stations.
She received a MacArthur Foundation 'genius grant.' (1999)
