Why he might be annoying:

The saxophone was the first woodwind instrument he worked on — in his early teens!
He was a high school dropout.
He initially named his signature piece ‘Blues a la Canadiana’ — which he composed in response to his bandmates refusing to compose a ‘jazz flute piece.’
There is online confusion as to the year of his appointment to the Order of Canada (1992 or 1993).
While diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (2000), the type of cancer from which he died remained undisclosed.

Why he might not be annoying:

He began his music training with the violin, at age nine.
He spent 38 years as a booking agent for a Canadian jazz house where he would sometimes perform.
Among other classical composers, he released two albums based on the works of Johann Sebastian Bach (1971 and 1979).
The CBC used two of his compositions as respective opening and closing themes for one of their radio shows for at least 50 years.
‘Swingin’ Shepherd Blues’ – which was actually renamed that by a producer – is credited with popularizing the flute as a jazz instrument.
His son and grandson became musicians themselves.
