The Resume

    (October 28, 1920-May 18, 2013)
    Born in Dinuba, California
    Birth name was Claramae Haas
    Contralto opera singer
Portrayed Cousin Nettie in the film version of 'Carousel' (1956)
Performed in the operas 'Faust' and 'Hansel and Gretel'

Why she might be annoying:

Her marriage to Robert Turner ended in divorce.
The song 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco' was written for her, and not Tony Bennett - but Bennett beat her to actually recording it first (she never did get around to recording it herself).
She's sometimes mistakenly cited as the original vocalist for 'You'll Never Walk Alone' - that was Christine Johnson who originated the role on Broadway.
She was fourteen years older than Shirley Jones but was still made up to appear even older than she already was to Jones' Julie Jordan (at which point they might as well have changed the character to 'Aunt Nettie' while they were at it).

Why she might not be annoying:

She mastered 75 grand opera roles at the San Francisco Opera, the New York City Opera and the Metropolitan.
She is the only Metropolitan Opera singer to have appeared in a film version of a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.
She originated the title character of 'The Medium' which had its world premiere at Columbia University in 1946.
She participated in the first complete opera recorded by the Metropolitan Opera Company, 'Hansel and Gretel' (as the Stepmother) in 1947.
She was the first to sing 'I Left My Heart' (as an encore at her concerts) and never expressed any bitterness towards Tony Bennett for popularizing it.
She retired in the 1980s and moved to a rural area, where she lived for the rest of her life.
Shirley Jones claimed to have been so intimidated by her talent that when she first heard her sing she thought ‘Oh no, I don’t want to be in this movie with that woman. Her talent was extraordinary.'
