He worked as an insurance company clerk for nine years before taking up singing as a career.
During an amateur hour competition on Fred Allen's radio show, he finished second, losing out to a yodeler.
He originally went by his middle name until the sponsor of his radio show complained that listeners were confused by a man named Beverly.
He said about his straightforward singing style, 'I try not to do any vocal gymnastics. I'm not capable of it anyway.'

He was known for his powerful voice, perfect pitch and clear diction.
Graham said that without Shea he would not have had a ministry.
Graham said that many nights Shea's introductory song was more powerful than the sermon.
