Why he might be annoying:

In addition to Pepper, he was nicknamed the 'Wild Horse of the Osage.'
He was a prankster, frequently irritating manager Frankie Frisch with his antics, such as dropping water balloons at Frisch from his hotel window.
He came out of retirement for one season when WWII thinned out the Major League rosters (1944).
As a minor league manager, he was fined and suspended for choking an umpire (1950).
Asked by the league commissioner if he had intended to harm the ump, he replied, 'I meant to kill the buzzard.'

Why he might not be annoying:

Sportswriter Red Smith said, 'Pepper Martin wasn't the greatest hitter of all time, or the greatest fielder or thrower or base runner, but he did everything well and no more fiery competitor ever lived in any sport.'
A Major League umpire declared, 'There is no finer gentleman wearing a diamond uniform than Pepper Martin.'
He had a World Series batting average of .418, the third best overall and highest among players with at least 50 at bats.
He was the Associated Press' first Athlete of the Year (1931).
