He was a devoutly religious Catholic and an outspoken liberal, a combination which confuses those who tow the party-line.
He joked the he was the ‘biggest spender' in Washington due to the numerous social programs he supported.
He called Ronald Reagan the most ignorant man who ever occupied the White House.
After retiring from politics, he appeared in commercials for a motel chain and credit card company.
When he learned Barney Frank was announcing he was gay, he told his colleagues that Barney was ‘coming out of the room' instead of ‘coming out of the closet.'
He smoked cigars.

At his funeral, Bob Dole said he would ‘go down as one of the greatest political leaders of our time.'
He was the first Representative to publicly criticize Lyndon B. Johnson over the Vietnam War.
