The Resume

    (June 19, 1945- )
    Born in Rangoon (Yangon), Myanmar
Founding member and general secretary of the National League for Democracy (1988)
    Placed under house arrest by the military junta ruling Burma (Myanmar) (July 20, 1989-July 10, 1995; September 23, 2000-May 6, 2002; May 30, 2003-November 13, 2010)
Won the Nobel Peace Prize (1991)

Why she might be annoying:

She lived outside of Burma until 1988, when she returned to care for her ailing mother.
Her initial prominence in the democracy movement was based mostly on the fame of her father, Burmese independence leader Aung San.
Myanmar's state-run newspaper accused her of committing income tax evasion by spending her Nobel Prize money outside of the country.
Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej criticized international support for her, saying 'Europe uses Aung San Suu Kyi as a tool.'
On their 2009 tour, U2 encouraged fans to wear masks with her likeness during performances of 'Walk On.'

Why she might not be annoying:

Her father was assassinated when she was two.
When the pro-democracy 8-8-88 Uprisings began, she said 'I could not, as my father's daughter, remain indifferent to all that is going on.'
Her party won 80% of the seats in the first free elections in three decades, entitling her to become prime minister (1990).
Instead, the military junta nullified the results.
When supporters gathered outside her house, the government put up barbed wire barriers.
When her British husband was dying from prostate cancer, the Myanmar government refused to grant him a visa to visit her.
Whenever she and her husband tried to speak on the phone, the government would cut the line.
A member of her party said of the government's harassment, 'They even arrested her dentist. If she had a dog, they would arrest her veterinarian.'
She used her Nobel Prize money to establish a health and education fund for the Burmese people.
She said, 'It is not power that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it.'
