    Best known books were 'My Side of the Mountain' (1959), 'Julie of the Wolves' (1972) and 'On the Far Side of the Mountain' (1990)
    Won the Newbery Medal for Children's Literature (1973)

    Her first pet was a turkey vulture.
    She named her daughter Twig.
    The inclusion of 'Julie of the Wolves' on school reading lists has often been challenged by parents because it describes the attempted rape of the main character.

Why she might not be annoying:

    Her books were praised by reviewers for her 'lyric prose, vivid descriptions and meticulous research.'
    Until her mid-80s, she regularly visited the wild locales she wrote about.
    She told the School Library Journal she wanted to remembered as 'somebody who talked about nature, who awakened readers to a new world, and helped them restore it.'
