The Resume

    (May 19, 1936-March 17, 2023)
    Born in Conway, South Carolina
Member of the US House of Representatives from South Carolina (1975-80)
    Democrat
Served thirteen months in prison after being convicted of accepting bribes in the Abscam sting operation

Why he might be annoying:

When his first wife Sally filed for divorce and claimed she had documented evidence of his affairs with 23 women, his response to an aide was, 'Whew! Is that all she knew about?'
He and second wife Rita reportedly had sex behind a pillar on the steps of the Capitol during a break in a late-night legislative session.
He pocketed a $50,000 bribe while declaring, 'I have larceny in my heart.'
At his trial, he claimed that his heavy drinking had clouded his judgment.
One of his jobs after politics was selling cigarettes in post-Communism Eastern Europe for Philip Morris.

Why he might not be annoying:

He grew up so poor that he did not see an indoor toilet until age seven.
He was known for his outstanding constituent service.
The federal judge who reduced his sentence from two years to the thirteen month he had already served criticized Abscam as essentially entrapment by the FBI.
He eventually became a successful property developer in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
