He dropped out of school at 14: 'I don't think I could've handled another two years. It was so boring.'
He was fined £4,550 after testing positive for marijuana during an event (1997).
During the year after his first Welsh Open victory, his career went downhill thanks to his partying: 'I'd go boozing the night before a match and yet I couldn't understand why I was losing.'
He caused a media sensation by crediting his come-from-behind win at the 2001 Masters to having sex with his fiance during an intermission. ('I had to do something to break the tension.')

Why he might not be annoying:

He was named Young Player of the Year by the Snooker Writers' Association (1998).
His good looks, flamboyant style and youth appeal earned him the nickname 'the Beckham of the Baize.'
He said he would be willing to play nude to bring attention to the game.
He continued playing while undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.
