The Resume

    (March 25, 1925-February 9, 2007)
    Born in Walla Walla, Washington
Adopted name was Myrle Vernon King
Pitcher for the ‘King and His Court’ four-man barnstorming softball team (1946–2000)
2000 National Senior Softball Hall of Fame inductee

Why he might be annoying:

    He was abandoned at birth.
He was a troublemaker growing up.
He got kicked out of school as a teenager.
He failed on no fewer than two occasions to commit suicide.
A head injury and nervous breakdown ended his stint in the Marines in the Second World War.
His team was made up of a pitcher, a catcher, two infielders, and no other players (because he couldn’t play with only three, he said — ‘no one available to come to bat’).
He hated pop music and rarely had the car radio on.
‘I’m a pipsqueak because I’m caught in a nothing game. It’s like being a world champion noseblower.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    It rhymes with ‘trainer.’
He was adopted by a Seventh Day Adventist without going through the normal adoption routine.
Never mind, his four-man team – nicknamed the Harlem Globetrotters of softball for their team colors – usually outdid the standard team (‘if I got nine together, the game would be a farce’).
He had a few extra players on hand, just in case.
    He loved strawberries.
He whiffed several of baseball’s big dogs during a 1967 exhibition match (including Say Hey).
Sports Illustrated called him ‘vaudeville in the age of television’ and ‘the most underrated athlete of his time.’
At the Sydney Olympics, he threw the first pitch for a women’s softball competition — the day before a stroke that ended his career.
Have you ever seen one major-league pitcher get 238 perfect games? Or 930 no-hitters? Or more than 1,900 shutouts? Or a 114 mph fastball? Or more than 141,000 strikeouts?
