Why he might be annoying:

He was typecast as an overgrown child.
As a teen he ran away from home by locking himself into a famed magician, Howard Thurston's case.
He lived within blocks of Curly Joe De Rita, yet they never met.

Why he might not be annoying:

He reportedly quit the Stooges, so he could tend to his ailing wife (1958).
In actuality, he was committed to other projects and had no time to work with the Stooges.
He continued to act as a comedian until the '70s when his beloved wife took sick and he did tend to her.
After Curly and Shemp passed away Moe and Larry planned to work as a duo.
However, when the opportunity arose that Joe was willing to join them, they jumped at the chance.
