    It is dismissed by conservatives as a liberal rag.
    It was one of the last major newspapers to adopt color photography.
    Its motto is an outdated jab at the yellow journalism of Pulitzer and Hearst.
    Its paper circulation has been dropping for years.
    Sexism was rampant in its early years, with its first woman reporter being instructed not to reveal that she was hired by the paper.
    It minimized reporting of the Holocaust occurring in Germany during the 1940's.
    Its news coverage of the Soviet Union denied the massive famine occuring in the Ukraine (1931).
    It downsized staff in order to compete in an age with less ad revenue.
