Why he might be annoying:

He was a serial philanderer who tried to act like Ward Cleaver.
He was accused of taking a tone-deaf response to his son, Lance, coming out as a gay man.
He was seen on-camera urging his kids to be more responsible and work harder, but then would complain that modern family life had robbed men of their independence while being interviewed.
His wife confronted him about his adultery and ordered him to move out of the house in front of television cameras.
He remarried to Carol Lee Sutherland three years later. The two would later separate.
He was the most eager to participate in the documentary series and yet came out looking the least appealing.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the original reality TV dad.
He served in the Navy during World War II as a PT boat commander stationed in England and was involved in the D-Day invasion at Normandy.
He also served in the Korean War and received a bronze star.
He moved his family to Santa Barbara and created a successful business from scratch.
He was portrayed by Tim Robbins in the HBO produced film 'Cinema Verite.'
He and Pat Loud moved in together again to Los Angeles, near their daughters (the move was Lance's dying wish).
He and his family were angrily criticized at the time for displaying their everyday lives and problems for television audiences (although the show seems tame by today's standards).
He said: 'We spent 20 years building a family, and they selected only the negative, bizarre and sensational stuff. But I’m really grateful. It was a very gratifying experience.'
