Why he might be annoying:

    His parents were Loyalists who fled the US during the American Revolution.
    He was nominated as a candidate for the Nova Scotia provincial assembly, but withdrew after deciding he could not afford to take time away from business to campaign (1826).
    Early in company history, before the ships had brought in enough revenue to pay for their construction, he had to flee Halifax to avoid his creditors (1842).

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was a volunteer fire fighter in Halifax.
    He established a soup kitchen in Halifax to provide relief during the recession that followed the War of 1812.
    He established the first regular trans-Atlantic steamship line.
    He established an excellent safety record for his ships.
    He loaned eleven ships from his line to the British government to transport troops and supplies during the Crimean War.
