The Resume

    (March 27, 1984- )
    Born in Austin, Texas
Co-founder of Good Wagon Books (ended 2011)
Creator of Silk Road ‘darknet’ market (2011-2013)
Received two life sentences for engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, among other charges, without parole (February 2015)

Why he might be annoying:

Through his high school years, he was a pot smoker.
A video game company was one of his failed post-graduate ventures.
He saw another venture literally collapse before his eyes, on account of forgetting screws for the shelves that accommodated the used books being sold online.
On the matter of the Silk Road trial, his legal team steadfastly maintained that he was not ‘Dread Pirate Roberts’ (which didn’t matter, anyway).
He made two appeals to two separate United States courts, ending in the guilty verdict being fully upheld.

Why he might not be annoying:

He achieved the ultimate Boy Scout rank (Eagle Scout).
As a student of materials science and engineering at Penn State, he built a crystal he attached to a ring, for his (liberal!) girlfriend at the time.
He also viewed taxation and government as forms of coercion (hence his appreciation of economist Ludwig von Mises’ belief in economic freedom).
He credits ‘Alongside Night’ – a 1979 novel by J. Neil Schulman – as his inspiration for the Silk Road.
The federal government’s accusations of him paying for the murders of several people failed to become formal charges.
