Why Yonkers, New York might be annoying:

Most of the land the city was built on had belonged to the Philipse family; as Loyalists, they fled to England after the American Revolution, whereupon the state of New York seized and sold off their property.
David Berkowitz lived there while terrorizing New York City as the Son of Sam.
Its schools did not desegregate until 1988.
It was found in contempt of federal court for reneging on a consent agreement concerning where to locate public housing (1988); fines reached $1 million a day, with the city council relenting only when the costs of the fines threatened to force massive layoffs of city employees and cutbacks in public services.

Why Yonkers, New York might not be annoying:

Elisha Otis built the first elevator factory here.
It was one of the world's leading carpet manufacturing centers during the 19th century.
It is home of the oldest golf club in the US, St. Andrew's Club (founded 1888).
