The Resume

    (June 27, 1966-April 2, 1971)
    Aired on ABC
Gothic soap opera about supernatural events in the town of Collinsport, Maine
    Notable cast members include:
    Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins
    David Selby as Quentin Collins
    Alexandra Moltke as Victoria Winters
Joan Bennett as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard
    Nancy Barrett as Carolyn Stoddard
Grayson Hall as Dr. Julia Hoffman
Kathryn Leigh Scott as Maggie Evans
Lara Parker as Angelique Bouchard Collins

Why Dark Shadows might be annoying:

It was a fairly standard soap opera until supernatural elements were added six months into the run in a desperate attempt to goose the ratings.
Salon described it as having 'the Cheez-Doodliest special effects this side of Ed Wood, Jr.'
Fans nicknamed it 'Mic Shadows' for the number of times the boom microphone wandered into the frame.
Barnabas Collins' 'soulful' looks were usually the result of Jonathan Frid's difficulties in reading the cue cards without his glasses.
Due to stories involving time travel (into both the past and future) and a parallel universe, most of the cast played multiple roles.
With all this shifting about, if you had not been following the show from the beginning, it was damn tough to figure out what was going on and who was who.
The series was cancelled suddenly, so viewers never learned Barnabas' ultimate fate.
A prime-time revival on NBC lasted only 12 episodes (1991).

Why Dark Shadows might not be annoying:

During its run, it incorporated just about every Gothic/horror story around, from Dracula and Frankenstein to the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
The indoor settings (usually with a storm raging outside) of most of its scenes may have been dictated by the budget, but it gave the show an appropriately claustrophobic feel.
It turned 40-something theater actor Jonathan Frid into a Tiger Beat favorite.
It developed a large and loyal fan following.
Fans Tim Burton and Johnny Depp announced plans to make a film based on the series (2009).
It discovered the sex appeal of vampires decades before 'Twilight' and True Blood.
