He was hospitalized four times for alcoholism (1933-34).
He suffered from depression.
He based his recovery program on a belief in God.
He lobbied the AMA to classify alcoholism as a chronic disease, rather than poor willpower.

He took his last drink in 1934.
He started A.A. by persuading Dr. Robert Smith to stay sober with him (June 10, 1935).
His 12 steps have been used successfully for eating disorders, gambling, narcotics, debting, sex addiction and people affected by others' addictions.
No contribution is required and members of A.A. are not allowed to contribute more the $1,000 to the group.
He helped alcoholics get off the sauce.
