Many of the teams he played on, were mediocre.
A nail stabbed his eye when he was playing a game of 'horsey' at age five, causing blurred vision.
He was overshadowed most of his career.

Why he might not be annoying:

He grew up in poverty.
He had a retina detached during a game, and doctors said he couldn't play again.
Despite that and his earlier childhood injury, he was able to play seven more years.
He led the league in scoring in his second season.
He taught himself finance and deal-making during his basketball off-seasons.
After his basketball career, he launched a very successful steel company.
He donated money to Detroit's public schools when they threatened to cut their sports programs.
He was voted one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996).
