Appeared in 'A Tale of Two Cities (1935),' 'Captain Blood (1935),' 'Romeo and Juliet (1936),' 'The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938),' 'Son of Frankenstein (1939),' 'The Mark of Zorro (1940),' 'Dressed to Kill (1946)' and 'The Court Jester (1956)'
Won a Tony Award for the Broadway production of 'The Heiress (1947)'

He became typecast as Sherlock Holmes.
He began to dislike his Holmes character and quit it for fears it would ruin his career.
