Why he might be annoying:

He went by a pretentious single name.
He was a two hit wonder.
Though he only had two hits, he released the album 'Good Morning Starshine: The Best of Oliver.'
He was born on Washington's birthday and died on Lincoln's birthday.

Why he might not be annoying:

His friends called him Bill and described him as considerate and accessible.
In 1969 he reached #3 on Billboard's Singles chart with 'Good Morning Starshine' (from the musical 'Hair') and #2 with 'Jean' (from a poem penned by Rod McKuen).
Once his hits dried up he retired from show biz and became successful in the construction and pharmaceuticals industries.
His brother John Swofford was the former athletic director of the University of North Carolina and an ACC and BCS coordinator.
He died on the same day as Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Tom Landry and Charles M. Schulz.
