U.S. Governor

The Resume

    (March 2, 1793-July 26, 1863)
Fought in the War of 1812
Severely injured in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend (1814)
Congressman in the House of Representatives for Tennessee (1822-1827)
    Governor of Tennessee (1827-1828)
President of the Republic of Texas (1836-1838, 1841-1844)
Nicknamed the 'Raven' by Cherokee tribes
Senator in the U.S. Senate for Texas (1846-1859)
    Governor of Texas (1859-1861)
City of Houston is named in his honor

Why he might be annoying:

    He was an alcoholic.
He ran away from home and resided with a Cherokee tribe (1809).
He was a staunch supporter of Andrew Jackson.
He married a woman for 11 weeks and had to resign abruptly as governor of Tennessee because of the break-up.
After his initial political successes, he wandered around with the Cherokee and was drinking heavily the entire time.
This culminated in an assault trial in Washington (1832).
As leader of sovereign Texas, his major goal was to get his country absorbed into the United States.
    He was a slave-owner.
He had strong views on issues that were contradictory to the views of his constituency as Senator from Texas, making him a lame duck.

Why he might not be annoying:

He, as of 2005, is the only man to serve as governor in two states (Tennessee and Texas).
He defeated the entire Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto in 15 minutes (1836).
Without his assistance, it could be argued that Texas would have never gained independence.
He resigned from the army after his superiors rebuked him for wearing native clothing and being too close to the Indians (1818).
He frequently lobbied his fellow legislators for better treatment of native tribes.
He successfully arranged the annexation of the huge territory of Texas into the United States (1845).
He advocated tolerance of native Americans and an end to Mexican aggression during his terms as President of Texas.
He was a potential candidate for president, but his opposition to the extension of slavery and his strong Unionism alienated potential supporters.
He opposed secession from the Union.
He resigned as Governor of Texas after refusing to take an oath of loyalty to the Confederacy.
He is extremely popular in Texas.
