The Resume

    (April 24, 1815-December 6, 1882)
    Born in London, United Kingdom
Wrote the six 'Chronicles of Barsetshire' novels (1855-67) and six 'Palliser' novels (1865-80)
Individual novels include 'Barchester Towers' (1857) and 'The Way We Live Now' (1875)

Why he might be annoying:

He got a job at the post office through family connections.
He quit to run unsuccessfully for Parliament (1868).
The publisher of his first novel released it under the name of Trollope's mother, Frances, who was already an established writer.
He wrote to a female friend asking, 'Should anything happen to [my wife], will you supply her place--as soon as a proper period of decent mourning is over?' (Ultimately, his wife outlived him.)
Henry James called his writing 'a sort of mental pabulum' while Nathaniel Hawhtorne's son Julian wrote, 'He has done great harm to English fictitious literature by his novels.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He would write a thousand words during the hour before breakfast, then put in a full day at the post office.
He introduced the pillar box to Britain.
George Eliot wrote that his books were 'filled with belief in goodness without the slightest tinge of maudlin.'
Other fans ranged from Prime Minister John Major to Sir Alec Guinness, who never traveled without a Trollope novel.
Adaptations of his works have been staples on the BBC and, through 'Masterpiece Theatre,' PBS.
