He won a local NAACP Image Award for his performance in the Los Angeles production of James Baldwin's play 'The Amen Corner' (1985)
Because of his 'melodic voice,' he was chosen by producers Steven Bochco and Gregory Hoblit to start episodes by announcing 'Previously on Hill Street Blues' as clips recapping the storylines played.
He adopted eleven children.
He was asked by President George H.W. Bush to serve as a national spokesperson for adoption (1989).
