The Austro-Hungarian Empire declined during his reign.
He was estranged from his wife.
He took an actress named Katharina Schratt as his mistress.
Under his watch, Austria lost the Austro-Prussian War and the Second Italian War.
He always wore a military uniform in public.
He disliked his nephew and heir, Franz Ferdinand.
Despite this, he declared war on Serbia when Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. This triggered a chain of events that led to World War I.
A lock of his hair was auctioned for $17,870 in 2013.

His son, Crown Prince Rudolf, killed his mistress and then committed suicide.
His wife was murdered by an anarchist.
He tried to address Hungarian nationalism by having himself declared both emperor of Austria and King of Hungary.
He was mostly a popular ruler.
