Why he might be annoying:

Before becoming a pirate, he was third mate of a slave ship.
After being elected captain he stated, 'It is better to be a commander than a common man, since I have dipped my hands in muddy water and must be a pirate.'
He captured as many as 22 ships in one raid.
He hired musicians to play music onboard his pirate ships.

Why he might not be annoying:

At age 37, he was captured by pirates and given two choices - join his captors or die.
He broke the pirate mold by being well mannered, neatly dressed, well groomed, abstaining from alcohol and forbidding cruelty or unnecessary killing.
Rules for his crew included no excessive drinking, gambling or profanity and treating prisoners with respect.
After he died in battle his loyal crew, per request, buried his body at sea by throwing him overboard and not allowing his corpse to be taken by the enemy.
