Why he might be annoying:

    Despite the critical success of his first book, he still had to work at the Ritz Carlton as a valet and chauffeur to make ends meet. (It wasn't until his fourth book that he was able to support himself solely through writing.)
    He noted about his difficulties in plotting novels in advance, 'To get the first 100 pages of 'Mystic River,' I had to throw out 200.'
    He said, 'The dirty secret about writing books is that they get harder for me, not easier.... I never work from a place of confidence, I always expect to fail.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He sets almost all his works in or around Boston.
    He wrote 'Gone Baby Gone' after working as a counselor for abused children in Boston and seeing how the city was unable to help them.
    'Gone Baby Gone,' 'Mystic River,' and 'Shutter Island' were adapted into critically praised films.
    He won a Writers Guild of America Award for best writing for a drama series for The Wire (2008).
