The Resume

    (June 3, 1923-April 9, 2021)
    Born in Melbourne, Australia
    Birth name was June Browne
    Model, actress, and photographer
    Married photographer Helmut Newton (1948-2004)
Photographer for Vanity Fair, Elle, Vogue, and Interview
First solo exhibition in Amsterdam (1978)

Why she might be annoying:

She gave up her acting career when she and Helmut moved to Paris because she did not speak French.
She got her start as a professional photographer by filling in when her husband was too ill to take the pictures for a Gitanes cigarette ad (1970).
She photographed under the pseudonym ‘Alice Springs’ (taken from a town in Australia) because Helmut ‘thought one Newton in the family was enough.’

Why she might not be annoying:

She married Helmut despite his declaration, ‘Photography will always be my first love, but you will be my second.’
She won the Erik Kuttner Award for Melbourne’s best theater actress (1956).
She noted, ‘You can get one foot in the door as the wife of Helmut, but it can close as quickly as it opens if you can’t deliver the goods.’
A critic wrote, ‘June's photographs have an intimacy that Helmut's lack.’
She was unpretentious about her work, claiming ‘I have no technique. I wing it, and sometimes I get lucky.’
