    During World War II, he tried to serve in the military, but the draft service turned him down for having a repaired knee.
    He was the AL leader for being grounded into double plays (28, 1944).
    Despite having the most hits and doubles in the league during the 1950 season, he was beaten by Billy Goodman of the Red Sox.
    He called hard hit home runs 'tommyhawks' and high pitches 'wheelhouses' while announcing.
