The Resume

    (November 4, 1950- )
    Born in Asheville, North Carolina
Wrote the novels 'Cold Mountain' (1997), 'Thirteen Moons' (2006), 'Nightwoods' (2011), and 'Varina' (2018)

Why he might be annoying:

He uses deliberately archaic language in his historical novels, which Salon dismissed as 'ye olde diction.'
In the acknowledgements of 'Cold Mountain,' he apologized to his great-granduncle (whose desertion from the Confederate army inspired the novel) for taking 'great liberties' with his life.
He said,, 'After 'Cold Mountain' I never thought I wanted to write about the Civil War again,' only to return to the time period in 'Varina.'

Why he might not be annoying:

'Cold Mountain' was a best seller and won the National Book Award for fiction.
Asked if he had expected the success of 'Cold Mountain,' he replied, 'You would have to be deluded to even begin to imagine that.'
He received $8.25 million from Random House for 'Thirteen Moons,' a record advance for a novel.
While talking to Cherokee elders about the portrayal of Native Americans in 'Thirteen Moons,' they mentioned that one of their biggest concerns was the dying out of their language. He then paid for a dual English-Cherokee edition of 'Thirteen Moons,' making it the first contemporary work translated into the Cherokee language in over a century.
