The Resume

    (1987- )
Planned to blow himself up at the Hawara Checkpoint, West Bank (March 24, 2004)
Wore a vest with 18 pounds of explosives

Why he might be annoying:

He was a student who was suspended for two weeks for acting childish.
He lied to his family telling them he was going back to school, but instead went to the checkpoint.
He attended rallies whenever Palestinians celebrated suicide bombers.

Why he might not be annoying:

Although he could have blown up Israelis, he did not.
His family said he was easily manipulated and gullible.
His brother Hosni said he had the intelligence of a twelve year old.
He was bullied at school because he was tiny.
He was taken advantage of by the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade.
Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade immediately took responsibility for his actions, but as soon as Palestinians expressed anger at using a sixteen year old, they said they had nothing to do with it. In fact, they changed so drastically that they claimed it was a publicity stunt by Israel to make their group look bad.
Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade promised him martyrdom and 72 virgins in heaven.
He said he wanted to go to paradise. 'A river of honey, a river of wine and 72 virgins. Since I have been studying Qur'an, I know about the sweet life that waits there.'
His mother was crying and said 'It is forbidden to send him to fight.' She said 'to send a boy of this age to carry out an attack is not a patriotic act.'
His mother also said: 'He is young, he is small, he should be in school. Someone pressured him. If he was over 18, I wouldn't feel so angry ... then it is his decision.'
When he got to the checkpoint, Israeli intelligence were aware that someone was carrying a bomb.
As a long line of Palestinians were being checked, he said 'Move away, I am carrying an explosive belt.'
He said: 'When the soldiers stopped me, I didn't press the switch. I changed my mind. I didn't want to die anymore.'
Israeli Lieutenant Milrad said: 'He told us he didn't want to die. He didn't want to blow up.'
The Israeli Checkpoint commander said '... he would have harmed my soldiers, he would have also harmed the ... 200 to 300 innocent Palestinians there.'
After removing the vest, he said: 'I'm sorry for what I did.'
