Best known for her role as Lena Younger in hit Broadway play and film 'A Raisin In The Sun' and in 'Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright'
Appeared in films 'The Last Angry Man (1959),' 'Simply Heavenly (1959)' 'A Raisin In the Sun (1961)' and 'There Was a Crooked Man (1970)'

She was obese.
She was divorced.
Although adopted by a Jewish family, she became Catholic.
She didn't get her first acting role until she was thirty-six.

Why she might not be annoying:

She lost her only son in the Korean War.
She received Tony nominations for 'Raisin in the Sun' and 'Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright.'
Her role in 'Raisin' helped change the image of the black woman on stage and on screen.
She told Ebony magazine that after her son died, that she 'didn't owe the government anything else other than taxes.'
Her mother was a full-blooded Apache Indian.
While doing 'Raisin' on Broadway, she went on a diet and lost a significant amount of weight.
She was fluent in Yiddish.
