Why he might be annoying:

    He spent three decades as a 'plodding Communist ideologue.'
    He had a reputation for avoiding committing himself to a position.
    He refused to publicly side with either Boris Yeltsin or the Communist hardliners during the Moscow coup (August 19-21, 1991).
    He tried to impose a single state church on Ukraine.
    His mishandling of the economy produced hyperinflation with prices increasing as much as 10,000% a year.
    His son was accused of corruption in the privatization of the Black Sea merchant marine fleet.

Why he might not be annoying:

    When he was ten, his father was killed at the front in WWII.
    He was the only Communist leader in Ukraine to address the Republic’s nationalist movement prior to the breakup of the USSR.
    His knack for compromise was considered crucial in Ukraine’s peaceful transition to democracy.
    He forged closer ties with the West.
    He resisted pressure from Russia to maintain a common currency and armed forces in the Commonwealth of Independent States.
    When accused of flip-flopping, he replied ‘Only the dead and the stupid never change their views.’
