The Resume

    (June 1, 1831-August 30, 1879)
    Born in Owingsville, Kentucky
Confederate Lieutenant General during the Civil War
Commander of the Army of Tennessee (1864-65)
Defeated in the Atlanta Campaign (July-September, 1864) and the Battles of Franklin (November 30, 1864) and Nashville (December 15-16, 1864)

Why he might be annoying:

He graduated from West Point a less-than-impressive 44th out of a class of 52 after nearly being expelled his final year for excessive demerits.
He joined the Confederate army despite coming from a state that remained in the Union.
During the Second Battle of Bull Run, he got into a dispute with General James Longstreet who ordered him arrested.
Robert E. Lee's assessment of him was 'very industrious on the battlefield, careless off.'
During the Battle of Franklin, he sent his men across two miles of open ground without artillery support, an act dubbed the 'Pickett's Charge of the West.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He suffered several injuries in battle including: an arrow through the hand during a pre-Civil War battle against Comanches in Texas; an arm crippled by an exploding shell during the Battle of Gettysburg; and losing a leg during the Battle of Chickamauga.
As divisional commander, he earned a reputation for bravery by personally leading his men in battle.
He was released from his arrest and restored to command after his troops shouted to General Robert E. Lee, 'Give us Hood!'
He settled in New Orleans after the war, where he assisted in fundraising for orphans, widows and wounded soldiers.
He died in a yellow fever epidemic, days after the deaths of his wife and oldest child.
