    Wrote the children's picture books 'I Go Out' (1962), 'Bubbles' (1967), 'Mazes' (1970) and 'More Night' (1981)
    Famous lines include 'Breathe in experience, breathe out poetry' and 'The universe is made of stories, not of atoms'

Why she might be annoying:

    Critic Thomas Stumpf said of her political-themed poems, 'This is verse that, like rolled oats, is unappetizing but good for you.'
    She was a reporter for the 'Daily Worker,' the newspaper of the American Communist Party.
    Her marriage to painter Glynn Collins lasted six weeks.
    She traveled to Hanoi as an unofficial 'peace ambassador.'

Why she might not be annoying:

    When her sister was born, her books were thrown out to make room in the nursery.
    She contracted typhoid fever in an Alabama jail after she was arrested while covering the Scottsboro Boys trial for a student newspaper.
    She worked for the graphic division of the Office of War Information during WWII.
    Adrienne Rich called her 'our 20th century Coleridge, our Neruda, and more.'
    The Dictionary of Literary Biography noted, 'By her own choice, her life was not bland or sheltered.'
