The Resume

    (October 16, 1997- )
    Born in Osaka, Japan
Holds dual American and Japanese citizenship
Named Newcomer of the Year by the Women’s Tennis Association (2016)
    Won the US Open (2018)

Why she might be annoying:

She said, ‘When I go to Japan, people are confused. From my name, they don’t expect to see a black girl.’
She left Japan at age three, but ended up representing that country a decade later after the United States Tennis Association showed ‘little interest’ in her.
On practice days she usually follows four hours of tennis with four to five hours of playing video games.
Her US Open victory was marred by the controversy over her opponent, Serena Williams, being penalized a game by umpire Carlos Ramos.

Why she might not be annoying:

She has a Haitian father and Japanese mother.
Her serve has been clocked at 125 miles per hour – a speed achieved by only eight other female tennis players.
She managed to be a gracious winner at the US Open despite being booed by a rabidly pro-Serena crowd.
Williams admitted that Osaka outplayed her in the final, adding, ‘Honestly, there’s a lot I can learn from her from this match.’
