Why he might be annoying:

The year he was named MVP, he led the AL in strikeouts (95) and hitting into double plays (22).
It was speculated that he beat out Ted Williams for MVP – despite Williams winning the triple crown that year – because of controversy over Williams petitioning the draft board to change his 1A classification.
He was involved in a unique trade of managers when Cleveland sent him to Detroit in exchange for Jimmy Dykes (1960).

Why he might not be annoying:

While at the University of Oregon, in addition to baseball, he competed in football, soccer, gymnastics, and the long jump.
He missed the 1944 and 1945 seasons serving in the Army Air Corps.
Yankees manager Joe McCarthy declared, ‘The greatest all-around ballplayer I ever saw, and I don’t bar any of them, is Joe Gordon.’
