Baseball Player

The Resume

    (June 17, 1955- )
    Born in Belvidere, Illinois
Left fielder and designated hitter for the Cleveland Indians (1980-82)
American League Rookie of the Year (1980)
    Nicknamed 'Super Joe'

Why he might be annoying:

His career flamed out after he injured his back in spring training (1981).
He held the dubious distinction of being the first Rookie of the Year to be sent down to the minors the next season.
He played in fewer games during his career (201) than any other Rookie of the Year.
He was known for his eccentric behavior, ranging from opening beer bottles with his eye socket (and drinking the beer through his nose) to stitching up a cut on his arm with fishing line.
He later noted, ‘I only opened a beer bottle one time with my eye socket, back in college. But that story followed me the rest of my career.’

Why he might not be annoying:

During an exhibition game in Mexico, a crazed fan stabbed him with a penknife (March 8, 1980).
He was an extra in the Robert Redford baseball film ‘The Natural.’
He remained a fan favorite in Cleveland and was named ‘Ambassador of Baseball’ by the Indians.
