The Resume

    (1971-March 11, 1985)
    Owned by Alex Stein
Won the first three Frisbee Dog World Championships (1975-77)

Why he might be annoying:

Stein initially had trouble getting talent agents or executives at Wham-O (makers of the Frisbee) interested in Ashley’s abilities.
They finally got attention by jumping the fence onto the field at Dodger Stadium during a televised game against the Cincinnati Reds (August 5, 1974).
Stein got arrested for trespassing for the stunt.
At the first disc dog contest organized by Wham-O, Ashley was banned from competition, with an official telling Stein, ‘This is for amateurs. Your dog is a professional’ (1974)
Before a halftime performance at Rams Stadium, he took a whiz on the goalpost.
He was named after Ashley Wilkes, the ‘Gone with the Wind’ milksop who never did anything half as cool as his canine namesake.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was 21 inches tall at the shoulder but could leap nine feet into the air.
Their unauthorized exhibition at Dodgers Stadium so fascinated the crowd that play stopped for eight minutes while Joe Garagiola commented on the action.
Wham-O gladly paid Stein’s $250 fine for trespassing.
He was part of the pre-game entertainment at Super Bowl XI (January 9, 1977)
He was featured in an Oscar-nominated short film, ‘Floating Free.’ (1977)
The Frisbee Dog World Championship was renamed the Ashley Whippet Invitational in his honor.
’Sports Illustrated’ called him ‘a giant in his field, both a Naismith and a Ruth, the creator of a sport and its greatest practitioner.’
