Why he might be annoying:

He has a heavy country-boy drawl.
Though successful in the American Basketball Association (ABA), he had a losing season every year he coached in the NBA.
Predating Bobby Knight's infamous chair toss by over a decade, he threw a ball rack onto the court during a game.
He challenged Red Auerbach to a fight.
His trademark as a commentator is 'Boom, baby!' whenever a Pacer hits a three-pointer.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He grew up in poverty.
He hit the winning free throw in leading the Indiana Hoosiers to the 1953 NCAA title.
He is arguably the ABA's most successful coach, in leading the Pacers to three ABA titles.
His later NBA coaching years were handicapped by the NBA's financial restrictions when the Pacers joined the league.
His wife, Nancy, was assistant general manager of the Pacers (one of the first female executives of a major pro sports team).
He and his wife organized a telethon that helped keep the Pacers in Indianapolis.
    He survived a heart attack.
