    He was the first stylist to receive on-screen credit in films.
    He created many of the hairstyles that became signature looks for film stars.
    He helped fashion Judy Garland's trademark braids as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
    He made legal history in 1938 by becoming the first bachelor in the United States to adopt a child.
    The state of California opposed the adoption and tried to prevent it, but he prevailed in court.
    He won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling for 'The Two Mrs. Grenvilles.'
    Grace Kelly requested him to style her hair for her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956.
    Lena Horne summoned him out of retirement to style her hair for 'That's Entertainment! III' in 1994.
