The Resume

    (February 19, 1918-October 24, 2006)
    Born in Warsaw, Poland
    Birth name is Benyomin Miedzyrzecki
    Warsaw Ghetto survivor
    Helped to reunite Holocaust survivors
Established a national Holocaust registry and two museums

Why he might be annoying:

He was able to survive by pretending to be a Gentile (which many of his friends couldn't do).
He led the criticism of President Reagan's 1985 visit to Bitburg, West Germany (understandably because members of the Nazi SS were buried there).
He said of the $5.2 billion compensation package from the German government to Nazi-era slave and forced laborers: 'There is a measure of justice -- whatever we are getting is a measure of justice. . . . It's too little too late.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He fought in the Warsaw ghetto underground.
He met his wife of over fifty years fighting in the underground movement.
He served on the Advisory Board of President Carter's Commission on the Holocaust.
He helped plan the 1981 World Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors held in Israel, the first event of its kind.
He helped start the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors in 1981 and was its longtime president.
At its peak, in 1983, more than 20,000 survivors and their descendants attended a reunion in Washington.
His advocacy led to two major Holocaust museums; the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington in 1983 and the Museum of Jewish Heritage — A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in New York in 1997.
He spent 24 years on the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, the museum's governing board.
He compiled a national registry of Jewish Holocaust survivors who settled in the United States.
When he was asked why so many Holocaust survivors had been initially reluctant to come forward, he answered: 'Our vengeance was rebuilding life.'
