    Born in Pallas, County Longford, Ireland
    Wrote novel 'The Vicar of Wakefield' (1766)
    Wrote poem 'The Deserted Village' (1770)
    Wrote plays 'The Good-natur'd Man' (1768) and 'She Stoops to Conquer' (1771)

Why he might be annoying:

    His historical and scientific works are inaccurate (and often plagiarized).
    He was often broke or in debt.
    He was a compulsive gambler.
    Horace Walpole called him an 'inspired idiot.'
    He was a notoriously bad public speaker.
    He was resentful of his friend Samuel Johnson's fame.
    He planned to emigrate to the United States but missed the boat.
    He died trying to treat himself for a kidney infection.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He caught smallpox as a child and was permanently disfigured.
    He managed to tour Europe with little money, supporting himself with flute playing and English lessons.
    He may have written 'The History of Goody Two-Shoes,' one of the first children's books.
    Much of his work is concerned with the suffering of the poor and powerless.
    'The Vicar of Wakefield,' ignored in his own time, was very popular in the 19th century.
    His naturalistic comedies revolutionized 18th century theatre.
    Samuel Johnson wrote his epitaph, 'He touched nothing he did not adorn.'
