U.S. Congressman
    (November 17, 1949- )
    Name pronounced ‘Bay-ner'
    Republican Representative from Ohio (1991-October 30, 2015)
Elected Majority Leader (February 2, 2006)
    Roman Catholic
61st Speaker of the House of Representatives (January 5, 2011)
If his name is pronounced phonetically, it sounds like ‘Boner.'
He voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1991.
He distributed campaign checks from tobacco lobbyists on the House floor (1995).
In 1997, he was one of the leaders of the Republican coup to replace Speaker Newt Gingrich with Representative Bill Paxon.
Although he ran for Majority Leader on a platform of campaign reform, it has been noted that he has significant connections to lobbyists and has accepted contributions from Indian tribes that were clients of Jack Abramoff.
He cries in public. A lot.
He refused to lead House Republicans to any sort of compromise regarding the debt ceiling and ended negotiations with President Barack Obama (July 22, 2011).
He threatened to lead a lawsuit by the House GOP against President Obama, claiming Obama was exceeding his Presidential power with use of executive actions (June 25, 2014).
He was a member of the Gang of Seven, a group of Republican Congressmen elected in 1990 that exposed the fiscal irresponsibility of over 350 Congressmen, Democrat and Republican, who had bounced checks. Out of those, 23 were convicted of violating the law.
He never tries to get pork for his district.
He pushed the Freedom to Farm Act of 1996 through the House, which reduced farm subsidies and limited federal controls on farming.
He pushed the bipartisan No Child Left Behind Act through the House.
Boehner's victory was a surprise even to himself.
His victory gives the Republicans a chance to show a better public face.
